Car Rental in Devon
Blessed with a mild climate and frequent summer sunshine, the county of Devon boasts two coastlines, making it an ideal destination for tourists. The spectacular beaches of North Devon offer occasional Atlantic breakers to delight surfing enthusiasts, while the superb sandy stretches of the south are complemented with scenic cliffs and coves. It is with good reason that Torquay, Paignton and Brixham on this coastal strip are dubbed the English Riviera. Between Devon’s two coastlines, the green hills and scenic countryside create timeless picture postcard impressions of romantic, rural England.
In North Devon, car hire is available at our Enterprise Barnstaple office, situated on Old Station Road. Down in South Devon, a car can be picked up quickly and straightforwardly with our two Enterprise offices in Exeter. We also serve West Devon customers from our other depots in Newton Abbot, Torquay, Plympton and Plymouth for convenient access to Cornwall.
Our Vehicles for Hire in Devon
At Enterprise, we offer you a wide range of the latest vehicles to suit your needs. Groups heading out for a challenging hike in the Dartmoor National Park or families looking to explore the fantastic beaches and coastline may find a people carrier such as the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer, Volkswagen Sharan or Ford Galaxy to be their best option. Alternatively, we offer various mini, economy and compact cars from the Toyota Aygo and Opel Corsa to the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus or Mondeo.
For maximum comfort on longer main road and motorway runs, we also offer the Vauxhall Insignia diesel or Mercedes A-Class premium cars to travel in style. Other options include a nine-seater minibus such as the Ford Tourneo; this is ideal for walking clubs and associations, teams competing in the annual Ten Tors event on Dartmoor, and group travel or airport runs. Whatever your choice, you can rely on us for the latest models and fully serviced vehicles, ready for your trip.
Attractions in Devon
From the coastline at Exmouth and the wide, curved bay of Dawlish, to magical smuggler’s coves and the impressive seaway of Plymouth Sound, there’s a wealth of amazing sights to see. Here, head out of central Plymouth towards Fort Bovisand or Wembury Beach for some great views of the breakwater and a sandy bay. Just a little further south is the coastal resort of Salcombe, considered by many returning visitors to be one of the most magnificently located settlements in England. This small town is located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A short distance to the east lie the English Riviera seaside towns of Brixham, Paignton and Torquay, where popular boat trips are available from the quayside. While in the area, there may also be time to see the Jurassic Coast cliffs near Budleigh beach, prestigiously designated as a world heritage site.
Nearby Buckfast Abbey (head for Buckfastleigh) is a popular site for those who have had enough sun and sand. The site also has lush, fragrant lavender gardens as well as a monastery shop with a restaurant. Other points of interest include Powderham Castle, Haldon Forest Park (near Kennford) and - for children - Crealy Adventure Park, situated near Clyst St Mary off the A3052 with an entertaining choice of rides and live shows as well as its Animal Kingdom. Alternatively, on the north Devon coast, some of the excellent beaches include Ilfracombe and Woolacombe, near Barnstaple.
Places to Visit Outside Devon
From Plymouth, the neighbouring county of Cornwall is just across the River Tamar bridge. Centuries ago, it was even thought of as a separate country. On the north Cornish coast see the Celtic monuments and the small town of Tintagel for yourself, as you hear the King Arthur legends or listen to tales of sunken kingdoms. The road onwards from here leads to Newquay, a surfer's delight, or the fishing village of Padstow with one or two well-known restaurants. Alternatively, stop off on the Lizard Peninsula, the southernmost point in Britain, and watch as rays of bright sunshine reflect off the shimmering sea.
In the opposite direction, the Bristol area offers visitors a long list of activities and attractions from the restored Victorian ship SS Great Britain, to the Bristol Aquarium near the harbour. For evening entertainment, the Bristol Hippodrome theatre listings occasionally include London companies. Bristol Zoo has a reptile house and gorillas, as well as a butterfly forest and attractive gardens. The Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole are not far away in Somerset.
Airport Car Hire
Exeter has a busy regional airport, situated approximately four miles (six kilometres) to the east of the city. The airfield benefits from convenient connections to the A30 dual carriageway and the M5 motorway. From here, head west into Devon and Cornwall - or east for Bristol and the Midlands. The nearest Enterprise branch here is North Exeter, which is a short distance from the airport and can be reached with ease via the Honiton Road towards neighbouring Monkerton, then via Cumberland Way to the B3181. With your newly hired car, Devon invites you to enjoy its coastal and countryside attractions.
Parking and Traffic Information in Devon
Summer Saturdays are some of the busiest days on the main trunk roads throughout the southwest, especially the A361 and the A303. Additionally, the M5 motorway is particularly prone to traffic jams with lengthy tailbacks during bank holiday weekends.
As is typical of southern coastal resorts, on-road parking space is usually tightly controlled. Pay parking meters are in operation in most seafront areas between April and September – and in some cases all year round. To avoid inconvenience, it is wise to check the signs carefully.
